AI answers moved into Gmail this week
Gmail search AI Overviews went global on 15 September and finish rolling out on 21 September, on by default. A new AI answer surface, and the first one you cannot optimise for.
Short answer
Google made AI Overviews in Gmail search available globally to English-language paid users on 15 September 2026, after a gradual rollout that began on 3 September. Scheduled Release domains complete on 21 September. It is on by default wherever Gemini for Workspace in Gmail is enabled, and it excludes personal accounts in the EEA, the UK, Switzerland and Japan. It summarises a person's own inbox, so unlike AI Overviews in Search there is nothing on your website that can influence it.
Google turned on AI Overviews inside Gmail search globally on 15 September, and Scheduled Release domains finish rolling out on 21 September.
That is the fourth AI answer surface to launch or widen this year, and the first one where the answer is assembled entirely from content you do not control.
We sell AI answer visibility at NovaTechRay, so the useful thing we can say about this one is that it is not a channel.
What actually shipped
A person types a question into the Gmail search bar in plain language, and gets a summary instead of a result list.
Google's own announcement sets the dates out plainly.
Gradual rollout from 3 September for Rapid Release domains and consumer accounts, global availability announced 15 September, and Scheduled Release domains starting 21 September.
It is on by default wherever Gemini for Workspace in Gmail is enabled.
English only for now. Personal accounts in the EEA, the UK, Switzerland and Japan are excluded.
Why it matters to a business owner, and how much
The honest answer is: less than the announcement suggests, and in a direction nobody is selling.
There is no page to write. There is no schema to add. There is no crawler to allow, because the corpus is one person's mailbox and your website is not in it.
So the GEO checklist does nothing here. We would rather say that than invent a service around it.
But something does reach that summary, and it is the email you already sent.
A confirmation with the date, the time, the party size and the address in the body will summarise cleanly. The same confirmation with all of that locked inside a PNG header or a booking-widget iframe will not, for exactly the reason a JavaScript-rendered menu does not reach an AI crawler. The content has to be text.
That is the whole action item, and it is a ten-minute check of your own templates.
The pattern worth tracking
Four surfaces now answer instead of listing: Search, AI Mode, the assistants, and now the inbox.
Three of them read the open web. One reads private mail.
The reason to keep a list is that the measurement story changes every time one launches, and the number of places where an honest answer is "you cannot influence this" is growing faster than the number where you can. We wrote about what can be measured, and how badly, in how to track AI search visibility.
We got one thing wrong when this first appeared in the US: we assumed it would stay a consumer feature and skipped it. It is now default-on across Workspace business and enterprise plans, which is most of the people who book a table on a work address.
The short version
- Gmail search AI Overviews went global on 15 September, Scheduled Release completes 21 September.
- It is on by default where Gemini for Workspace in Gmail is enabled.
- Nothing on your website can influence it. The corpus is the recipient's own mailbox.
- Write confirmations and booking emails as real text, not as an image or an embed.
- Treat any agency selling you "Gmail AI Overview optimisation" as a test they just failed.

Frequently asked questions
When did Gmail search AI Overviews launch globally?
Google announced it on 15 September 2026. The gradual rollout began on 3 September for Rapid Release domains and consumer accounts, and Scheduled Release domains start their full rollout on 21 September 2026.
Is it on by default?
Yes, wherever Gemini for Workspace in Gmail is enabled along with Workspace Intelligence access to Gmail. It is not an opt-in that each person has to find.
Can I optimise my website to appear in it?
No. It summarises the contents of one person's own mailbox. Nothing on your site is a candidate source. The only thing that reaches it is email you actually sent that person.
Who does not get it?
It is English-language only for now, and personal accounts in the EEA, the UK, Switzerland and Japan are excluded.
