The ChatGPT merchant program is a waitlist and a product feed. OpenAI is moving away from Instant Checkout.
Short answer
OpenAI's merchant page, read 22 October 2026, says stores apply to share a product feed and join a waitlist. Shopify and Etsy catalogs are already in. Purchases happen on your site, with no fees, and a standalone Instant Checkout is being dropped.
Google finishes 'chatgpt merchant' with 'program', 'application form', 'feed' and 'portal'. OpenAI's merchant page, read on 22 October 2026, says merchants apply to share a product feed and join a waitlist, Shopify and Etsy catalogs are already integrated, there are no fees on purchases that start in ChatGPT, and OpenAI is moving away from a standalone Instant Checkout. One vendor's test of the new Shop at buttons adds a caution. What a store should do, and what nobody has shown yet.
Google autocomplete, checked on 22 October 2026, finishes "chatgpt merchant" with "program", "center", "application form", "feed" and "portal".
People are looking for a sign-up page. There is one, at chatgpt.com/merchants.
Here is the complication. Read on 6 November 2026, that page says less about getting in than the autocomplete suggests, and more about what OpenAI has stopped doing.
Its FAQ says OpenAI is "moving away from a standalone Instant Checkout experience".
So the thing many store owners heard about, buying inside the chat, is being wound back. What is left is discovery, a product feed and a waitlist.
Step 1: read what the merchant page says
Six points, all from chatgpt.com/merchants on 6 November 2026.
You apply, then wait. Merchants apply to share product data. If you have already applied, the page says, you are on the waitlist.
Shopify and Etsy are already in. If you sell through either, OpenAI says your catalog is already integrated and no application is needed.
Checkout is yours. Shoppers are sent to your site or app by default, and purchases are completed there.
No fees on those purchases. The FAQ says there are no fees on purchases that start in ChatGPT.
A feed is optional. ChatGPT can crawl your site without one. OpenAI says a feed gives you more control and keeps information current.
It is early. Shopping is live in a single market so far. OpenAI says a self-serve merchant platform is coming later this year, with more merchants and regions over time.
Step 2: understand the protocol name
The page says the program is built on the Agentic Commerce Protocol, which it calls open infrastructure for commerce in ChatGPT.
Today, per the page, it supports product discovery and recommendations from shared product data. OpenAI says it will expand over time to cover more of the shopping journey.
For a store, the practical meaning is simple. The protocol is the format your feed travels in. You do not need to read the spec unless you are building the feed yourself, and the application form asks whether yours already meets it.
Step 3: know what the form asks for
The application form, as rendered on 6 November, asks for:
- Your name, title, work email and a profile link.
- Company, headquarters and your store's website.
- Primary product categories, from a fixed list that runs from beauty to travel.
- Whether your feed is ready and meets OpenAI's specifications.
- Feed size by unique SKU count, in bands.
There is no field for traffic, revenue or ad spend.
That fits OpenAI's other statements. Appearing in results is not something you buy, and the page's own claim is that richer product data gets better placement.
Step 4: the Shop at buttons, and one vendor's test
On or around 10 October 2026, ChatGPT began showing "Shop at" buttons under recommended products.
The only measurement I could find comes from WISLR, an analytics vendor, in an article by Tony Castillo published 14 October and updated 16 October. Concede the limits first: it is one vendor that sells consulting, four tracked brands, a 250-prompt set, and four days of data the author calls provisional.
With that said, WISLR reported two things worth testing yourself.
Most buttons pointed somewhere other than the brand. WISLR counted a majority going to big-box retailers and only about one in twenty to the brand's own store.
But the brand's product page changed that. When it appeared among the answer's sources, WISLR found about a third of that brand's buttons pointed to its own store, against roughly one in seventeen when it did not.
That second finding is the one that matters for GEO. It says the product page being cited is what moves the button. It is also exactly the kind of finding that needs a second source before anyone builds a strategy on it.
Step 5: the tracking gap
WISLR also reported that for about a week from 8 October, links from ChatGPT arrived with no referrer and no UTM tag, so analytics filed them as direct traffic. It reported the utm_source=chatgpt.com tag restored around 15 October.
OpenAI has not commented publicly on that, per WISLR, and I found no OpenAI note about it.
If your ChatGPT referrals dropped in that window, check direct traffic for the same days before you conclude anything. We covered the wider version of this problem, where AI referrals land in the wrong channel, in our post on correcting GA4 for AI referrals.
Step 6: what a store should do now
If you sell on Shopify or Etsy: you are already integrated, per OpenAI. Your job is the product data. Complete titles, current prices, real availability, clear images.
If you sell elsewhere: apply through the form, then keep working on the pages ChatGPT can already crawl. The waitlist has no published timeline.
Either way: make the product page itself the best answer to the question a shopper asks. Plain text specs, honest comparisons, shipping and returns stated on the page.
That is the one lever every source agrees on. OpenAI says richer data gets better placement. WISLR's test, for what one test is worth, says the cited product page pulls the button home.
Step 7: what nobody has shown yet
Three open questions, as of 6 November.
How ChatGPT chooses which retailer gets the button. OpenAI's merchant page does not say.
Whether a feed changes ranking or only accuracy. The page says richer data helps products surface with more accurate information, which is not the same claim.
How much traffic any of this sends. I have found no published numbers from more than a handful of stores.
I will update this post when any of those three gets a real answer. NovaTechRay corrects older posts when the field moves, and this one is likely to move.
Where this leaves a service business
None of this applies if you sell a service rather than products. A clinic, an agency or a consultant has no catalog to feed.
VALORAE Arc, the group's short-form clipping agency, is a fair example: it prints no price list and scopes every campaign on a call, so there is nothing a feed could carry.
For those businesses the question is which platform's pages get cited at all. VALORAE Media compared which platform gets you into AI answers from the social side.
The short version
- OpenAI's merchant page is a waitlist and a product feed, read 6 November 2026.
- Shopify and Etsy catalogs are already integrated; others apply.
- Checkout happens on your site, with no fees, and standalone Instant Checkout is being dropped.
- A feed is optional; it fixes what the crawl gets wrong.
- One vendor's four-day test says your cited product page pulls the Shop at button to your store. Treat it as a lead, not a law.
- Check direct traffic for 8 to 15 October before blaming ChatGPT for a drop.
- Make the product page the best answer, in plain text.

Frequently asked questions
What is the ChatGPT merchant program?
OpenAI's page at chatgpt.com/merchants, read on 22 October 2026, invites merchants to apply to share a product feed so their products can appear in ChatGPT shopping results. It is built on the Agentic Commerce Protocol. Applicants go on a waitlist, and OpenAI says a self-serve merchant platform is coming later this year.
How do I apply to the ChatGPT merchant program?
Through the form on chatgpt.com/merchants. It asks for your company, website, product categories, feed size by unique SKU count, and whether your feed meets OpenAI's specifications. If you sell through Shopify or Etsy, OpenAI says your catalog is already integrated and no application is needed.
Does ChatGPT still have Instant Checkout?
OpenAI's merchant FAQ, read 22 October 2026, says it is moving away from a standalone Instant Checkout experience and prioritising merchant-owned checkout. Shoppers discover products in ChatGPT and complete the purchase on the merchant's own site or app.
Does it cost anything to be in ChatGPT shopping results?
OpenAI's FAQ says there are no fees on purchases that start in ChatGPT. Ads in ChatGPT are a separate, paid product and are not the same as appearing in shopping results.
Do I need a product feed if ChatGPT already crawls my site?
OpenAI says no, but a feed gives you more control over how your products appear and keeps price and availability current. Crawling still works; the feed is the way to correct what the crawl gets wrong.
