How It Works

Google AI Overviews: what local businesses can influence

AI Overviews sit above the results a local business relied on. What feeds them, which levers exist, and how to stop losing the clicks position one used to bring.

Short answer

AI Overviews are generated from Google's existing index, so the inputs are the same signals that already drive ranking: crawlable content, structured data, Google Business Profile completeness and third-party corroboration. There is no separate submission path. The practical levers are entity consistency, complete Business Profile attributes, question-shaped content that answers directly, and building demand that does not depend on a click.

AI Overviews changed the geometry of a results page for local businesses. The generated block sits where the top organic result used to be, and it frequently answers the question outright.

There is no way to submit to it and no dashboard for it. What there is, is a reasonably clear picture of what feeds it.

Where the content comes from

An Overview is generated from Google's existing index. That is the most useful fact about it, because it means there is no separate optimisation surface. Everything that makes a page rank makes it eligible.

For local queries, Google is drawing on the web index, Google Business Profile data, Maps data, and review content. The Overview names businesses and links to sources, and those links come from pages already in the index.

The implication is direct: there is no AI Overviews strategy that is separate from doing local search properly. There is only doing it properly, plus writing in a shape that is easy to extract from.

Google Business Profile is the biggest local lever

For anything with local intent, your Business Profile carries more weight than most of your website.

The items that matter and are commonly neglected:

Primary category, chosen precisely. The single most important field. "Coffee shop" and "Espresso bar" surface differently.

Secondary categories, used honestly and not stuffed.

Every applicable attribute. Google keeps adding them. Outdoor seating, accessibility, payment methods, service options, dietary provision, whether you have wifi. Each is a filter in a query somewhere.

Hours, including special hours for holidays and seasonal changes.

Products and services, itemised where the category supports it.

Photos, refreshed. Recency of media is a live signal.

Q&A, which is publicly editable. Ask and answer the questions your customers ask. If you leave it empty, someone else may answer wrongly on your behalf.

Reviews and replies. Review text is descriptive content Google holds about you. Replies demonstrate an active business.

Content shape that gets extracted

Beyond the profile, the pages on your own site that get pulled into Overviews share a pattern.

They answer in the first two sentences. No preamble.

Their headings are questions. Matching the phrasing of the query gives the extractor an obvious anchor.

They contain specific facts. Numbers, hours, prices, distances, names. Generic prose has nothing to extract.

Their sections stand alone. A passage that only makes sense in sequence gets quoted badly or skipped.

They carry structured data that agrees with the visible text.

The traffic question

The honest position is that Overviews reduce clicks on some query types and not on others, and the mix varies by business.

Informational queries that the Overview fully answers lose clicks. Someone asking what time you close gets the answer and does not visit. That was never valuable traffic.

Queries with booking or purchase intent still convert to clicks, because people want to see the room, check availability, or look at the menu before committing.

What to do about it:

Segment Search Console by intent rather than watching one traffic line. Informational impressions rising while clicks fall is expected. Commercial clicks falling is a real problem.

Track branded search volume. Overview citations without clicks show up here, delayed. Rising branded search alongside flat organic clicks means the citations are working.

Build routes that do not depend on the click. Email, returning customers, direct booking, a reason to remember your name. This is ordinary business advice and it is now also search strategy.

Own the queries where a click is required. Booking, availability, menu, portfolio. Make those pages excellent, because no Overview can substitute for them.

What is not worth your time

Chasing the exact snippet. The Overview rewrites everything. You are influencing what it draws on, not authoring the output.

Blocking snippets. nosnippet limits Overview use and it also strips your ordinary search presence. For a local business this is self-harm.

Waiting for it to go away. Generated answers above the results are the direction of travel across every major search product.

The short version

Complete the Business Profile properly. Make the entity record consistent everywhere. Answer real questions directly on pages that stand alone. Deploy structured data that matches. Then measure branded search and enquiries rather than only clicks, because the value has partly moved from the click to the mention.

Frequently asked questions

Can I opt out of AI Overviews?

There is no dedicated opt-out. The nosnippet and max-snippet robots directives limit how much of your content can be shown in snippets and these also constrain Overview use, but applying them broadly damages your ordinary search presence. For a local business that trade is almost never worth making.

Do AI Overviews reduce clicks?

For informational queries that the Overview fully answers, yes. For queries with commercial or local intent, users frequently still click through to book, check hours or see photos. The effect varies a lot by query type, which is why segmenting your Search Console data by intent is more useful than looking at a single traffic line.

Does being cited in an Overview help even without a click?

Yes. The citation puts your name in front of someone at the moment of deciding, and a meaningful share of those people search your brand directly afterwards. Track branded search volume alongside organic clicks or you will misread what is happening.

Does Google Business Profile feed AI Overviews?

For local queries, heavily. Profile completeness, categories, attributes, hours, photos and reviews are among the strongest local signals Google holds, and Overviews for local intent lean on them. A neglected profile is the most common cause of poor local AI visibility.
