AI Mode in Chrome's address bar: what reaches it, what you can measure, and what Google has not said
Short answer
Press Tab then Enter in Chrome's address bar and you open Google's AI Mode: Tab moves to the AI Mode button, Enter selects it, then you type your question. The line is Chrome's own hint. To hide the button, right-click the bar and unselect Always show AI Mode. Search Console counts AI Mode clicks inside the Web search type.
Press Tab then Enter in Chrome's address bar and you open AI Mode instead of running a search. Tab moves to the button, Enter selects it. How to hide it.
On 18 September 2025 Chrome's VP, Parisa Tabriz, wrote that Google was making the Chrome address bar "even smarter with AI Mode."
The announcement on Google's blog promised "complex, multi-part questions, from the same place you already search."
Five months later the box got a second door. And people are now searching for how to close it.
Google autocomplete, read 10 October 2026, finishes "ai mode in chrome" with "search bar", "desktop", "disable" and "disappeared". That is the searcher side. The business side is quieter and matters more: when your customer types into that bar, where does the query go, and does your analytics see the click?
Here is the complication. Google documents the click. I could not find a Google page that documents the referrer.
Step 1: What the address bar does now
Abner Li at 9to5Google described the change on 21 February 2026. The bar already had "a button at the right that sent what you entered to AI Mode."
Chrome 145 on desktop added a plus menu on the left, matching the one on google.com/ai. Li lists most recent tabs, image and file uploads, tools and a model picker in it.
When you pick something, he writes, "the address bar expands into a prompt box."
Google's own Chrome Help page on AI Mode, read 10 October 2026, confirms the shape. It says AI Mode "divides your questions into subtopics, then searches for each one simultaneously."
Step 2: What "Press tab then enter to ask AI Mode" does
This is the part most coverage skips.
Press Tab and focus moves to the AI Mode button on the right of the address bar. Press Enter and that button opens AI Mode. Then you type your question.
Google's Chrome Help page, re-read on 6 November 2026, lists it as the keyboard route: select AI Mode, "Or, on your keyboard, press Tab + Enter."
The sentence itself is Chrome's. Chromium's strings file, read the same day, sets "Press tab then enter to ask AI Mode" for when the bar is focused and empty. Its announcement for the focused button reads "AI Mode button, press Enter to ask AI Mode."
Chromium's placeholder code explains the ⇥ in front of the hint: a character added "to represent the tab key." It also caps the hint at 3 shows a day and 15 in total for each profile, and only shows it while the AI Mode button is visible.
So hiding the button, covered in Step 6, should remove the hint too. That is Chromium's main branch, read and not tested in a browser, so your installed Chrome may differ.
So the bar has two exits. Type and press Enter, and the help page describes nothing new. Pick AI Mode, and the question lands on the AI Mode results page.
Asking about the current page works differently. The help page says "the result opens in the AI Mode side panel" when you ask about the page you are browsing.
On Android the same help page says to tap the address bar, then AI Mode. Its menu offers "Add current tab", "Tabs", camera, gallery and files.
Step 3: The plus menu that can share your tabs
The plus menu is the piece that changes the input, not only the route.
Li writes that the most recent tabs option lets people share "the contents of open pages with AI Mode" to summarise and question them.
The desktop help page lists "Add recent tabs", image or file upload, tools such as Canvas and Create Images, and a model choice. It also says you can add links directly into the AI Mode search box.
Think about what that means for a comparison shopper. Three of your competitors' pages are open, plus yours. The question goes to AI Mode with those tabs attached.
Your page is in the context because the customer put it there, not because it ranked.
Google has not published how a shared tab is weighed against pages AI Mode finds on its own. We do not know. I would not trust anyone who says they do.
Step 4: What Search Console will show you
Here the evidence is good, and I will concede it plainly.
Google's AI features documentation, last updated 10 December 2025, says sites appearing in AI Overviews and AI Mode are "included in the overall search traffic in Search Console." They sit in the Performance report, inside the Web search type.
The Performance report help page, read 10 October 2026, is specific. "Clicking a link to an external page in AI Mode counts as a click." Position "follows the same methodology as a Google Search results page."
One more line matters for anyone reading query data. A follow-up question inside AI Mode, it says, is "essentially performing a new query."
The catch: there is no AI Mode filter in that report. AI Mode clicks are blended with ordinary web clicks.
The separate generative AI report counts impressions only, which we covered in our read of the Search Console generative AI report. It tells you where you were shown. It does not split out the clicks.
Step 5: The referrer question nobody has answered
Search Console sees the click on Google's side. Your analytics sees the visit on yours. Those are different records.
I looked for a Google page that says what referrer an AI Mode click carries when it lands on a site. The AI features doc and the Performance report page do not say. Neither does the Chrome Help page.
So treat AI Mode visits in GA4 as unlabelled until proven otherwise. They may arrive as Google organic. Some may arrive with no referrer at all.
We already wrote up why a share of AI referrals lands in Direct, and the fixes there apply here. At NovaTechRay we would not build a report that claims to isolate AI Mode sessions on the analytics side. The data to do it honestly is not documented.
Stop guessing the split.
Report Search Console clicks as the Google total, report the generative AI impressions beside them, and write the gap into the report in plain words. A client can live with a known unknown. They cannot live with a number that changes meaning next quarter.
Step 6: The searcher side, from Google's help pages only
People ask three things. Here is what Google itself says, and nothing more.
How to use it on desktop. Select AI Mode on the right of the address bar, or press Tab then Enter. The left menu adds media, tools or a model.
How to turn it off. The help page says to right-click the address bar, then unselect "Always show AI Mode." That hides "AI Mode" and "Add tabs and more" from the bar. Google's page describes hiding the entry point, not removing AI Mode from Search.
Site owners have a different switch: the Search generative AI control keeps a whole site out of AI Mode.
Why it disappeared. Two documented causes. The feature "is not available to everyone or on every device at this time" and is still expanding to more languages and places. Or the button was hidden with the right-click option above, so re-tick it.
Third-party guides differ. Chrome Story's prints the option as "Always show AI Mode shortcuts", and several suggest flags and policies. Google's consumer help page does neither, so neither do we.
Step 7: What a business should do this month
Most of this is old work wearing a new button.
AI Mode answers from pages Google can find and read, and its monitoring feature keeps checking sites. If a new page is slow to be discovered, it is slow to be cited. The group's own walkthrough of how a new VALORAE page gets found covers the sitemap and indexing side.
Then make the pages customers keep open worth attaching. Pricing, specs, policies and comparisons are what a shopper drags into a tab-based question. If the answer to "what's the warranty?" lives in a PDF or behind a click, the tab carries less than it could.
And annotate your reporting. Mark February 2026 as the month the plus menu reached Chrome 145 on desktop, per 9to5Google, so a later shift in Google clicks has a candidate cause on file.
We do not know yet whether this moves traffic for any given site. That is the honest position, and NovaTechRay will say so in a client report before it says anything bolder.
The short version
- Read the hint literally: Tab moves to the AI Mode button, Enter opens it, and plain Enter still goes to Search.
- Count AI Mode clicks in Search Console's Web search type, blended, with no filter.
- Do not claim to isolate AI Mode visits in GA4; Google documents no referrer for them.
- Make the pages people keep open answer the questions they will ask about them.
- Tell searchers the documented fix: right-click the bar, toggle Always show AI Mode.
- Write the unknowns into the report instead of filling them with guesses.
This is the kind of measurement plan we put together at novatechray.com.
Frequently asked questions
What does Press tab then enter to ask AI Mode mean in Chrome?
It is Chrome's own hint for the AI Mode button. Chromium's source strings, read 6 November 2026, set the line for when the address bar is focused and empty. Tab moves focus to the AI Mode button on the right of the bar and Enter selects it, then you type your question.
How do I use AI Mode in the Chrome address bar on desktop?
Google's Chrome Help page, read 6 November 2026, says to select AI Mode on the right of the address bar, or press Tab + Enter, and enter your question. A menu on the left adds media, tools or a model, and you can ask about the page you are on.
How do I turn off AI Mode in Chrome's address bar?
The same help page says to right-click the address bar and unselect Always show AI Mode. That hides the AI Mode and Add tabs and more entries from the address bar. The help page does not describe a switch that removes AI Mode from Google Search itself.
Why did AI Mode disappear from Chrome?
Google's help page names two causes it documents: the feature is not available to everyone or on every device yet, and the button can be hidden by unselecting Always show AI Mode in the address bar's right-click menu. Re-tick that option to bring it back.
Are AI Mode clicks in Search Console?
Yes. Google's Search Central documentation, last updated 10 December 2025, says sites appearing in AI Overviews and AI Mode are reported in the Performance report within the Web search type. Its Performance report help page says clicking a link to an external page in AI Mode counts as a click.
