How It Works

GPT-6 answers with charts, forms and tools now. OpenAI has not said where your citation goes.

On 7 October 2026 OpenAI shipped GPT-6 with Intelligent UI, which lets ChatGPT answer with charts, buttons, forms and tools it builds on request. The announcement and the GPT-6 help page say nothing about how cited sources appear inside those answers. ChatGPT's search help page still says citations appear when available. What we know, what we do not, which pages are most exposed, and four checks to run this week.

Short answer

GPT-6's Intelligent UI, rolling out from 7 October 2026, lets ChatGPT answer with charts, forms and tools instead of text. OpenAI's announcement and help pages do not say how sources show up in those answers. Track your ChatGPT referrals and citations now, and expect calculator-style pages to lose the most.

On 7 October 2026 OpenAI changed what a ChatGPT answer looks like for, by its own count, more than 1.2 billion weekly users.

GPT-6 shipped with something OpenAI calls Intelligent UI. The announcement says responses "can include graphics, tappable buttons, forms, charts, and interactive experiences you can use directly in your conversation."

We went looking for one sentence in it. How do cited sources show up when the answer is a chart?

It is not there.

1. What shipped, in OpenAI's words

The capability is simple to describe. GPT-6 was "trained to compose responses using text, visuals and interactive elements, choosing how they fit together based on your question."

A comparison can appear side by side. An explanation can be an interactive diagram. And, OpenAI adds, "when a simple text answer is the most useful response, ChatGPT can give you that."

Then the line that matters for anyone who owns a tool page. You can "ask ChatGPT to create a tool for the task at hand, such as a calculator to explore how savings could grow, a bill splitter for dinner with friends, or a game."

Rollout started 7 October for Plus, Pro, Business and Enterprise, and reached Free and Go the next day. Paid tiers run on GPT-6 Sol. Free and Go run on GPT-6 Luna.

2. The gap: no word on citations

Here is the complication. We read the announcement in full and the GPT-6 help page. Neither mentions citations, sources or links.

The help page covers the Layout and visuals setting, usage limits and which apps support the feature. It is silent on attribution.

The only current statement is on ChatGPT's older search help page, read 9 October 2026: "Responses that use web search may include citations," and you can "Select Sources, when available."

"When available" did a lot of work in a text answer. It does more in a chart.

Search Engine Journal's Matt Southern flagged the same gap on 7 October: the announcement "doesn't say how sources will appear when responses are presented as charts, comparisons, or tools."

So the honest position is this. We do not know yet. Nobody outside OpenAI does.

3. Which pages are most exposed

Some things we can reason about without guessing at OpenAI's roadmap.

A page whose whole value is a calculation on public inputs is the easiest thing for a model to rebuild in the chat. Mortgage calculators, unit converters, tip splitters, savings projections. OpenAI's own examples are a savings calculator and a bill splitter.

Southern made the same point about Google's generated interfaces in AI Overviews in August. Tool pages built on generic inputs and public math are the first to be replicated.

The pages least exposed are the ones a model cannot rebuild:

  • first-party data nobody else has published
  • prices, availability and hours that change and need a live source
  • a named person's judgment, with their name on it
  • anything that ends in a booking, an order or a call

Notice that most local businesses already sit in the second group. A clinic's hours, a restaurant's menu and a hotel's rates need a source. A chart cannot invent them, or should not.

4. What changes for being cited

One improvement in the announcement cuts the other way. OpenAI says GPT-6 "makes better decisions about when to look something up and more reliably finds information that supports its answer."

It also says that for questions needing web search, GPT-6 Instant "starts answering 44% sooner, on average, than GPT-5.6 Instant." That is OpenAI's internal figure, and it describes speed, not sourcing.

Read together: more answers may trigger a lookup, and the answer begins rendering before thinking ends. OpenAI says GPT-6 can "begin answering while it continues to think."

What that does to which pages get fetched, and how many get credited, is an open question. Anyone selling you a GPT-6 citation strategy this week is selling a guess.

That is the line NovaTechRay holds on every platform change. We report what the vendor said, mark what it did not say, and correct the post when the evidence arrives.

5. What the settings page gives away

The help page has one more detail worth reading slowly.

On ChatGPT on the web, users can turn off a setting called Layout and visuals "to reduce visual elements." OpenAI then adds that "some visual elements may still appear" and that the setting "does not switch the entire answer experience to a classic or text-only mode."

So there is no going back to the old format, even for users who ask. Intelligent UI is the default experience now, not an experiment.

Two smaller facts from the same page. Intelligent UI "has no separate usage quota," so nothing throttles it relative to plain answers. And the older ChatGPT desktop apps for macOS and Windows do not support it, so the answer a customer sees depends on the app they open.

That last one matters for testing. Run your checks in the browser, where the feature is live.

6. Four checks to run this week

These are measurement steps, not optimisation tricks. You need a before picture while the rollout is still fresh.

  1. Log ChatGPT referrals separately. In GA4, ChatGPT traffic arrives with a chatgpt.com referrer or a utm_source tag on many links. Snapshot the last 28 days now so you can compare in November. Our GA4 corrections post covers the setup traps.
  2. Run your ten money questions by hand. Ask ChatGPT the questions a customer would ask before choosing you. Record whether you are named, whether a source appears, and what format the answer took.
  3. Mark which of your pages are pure calculators. If a page only computes something from public inputs, plan to add something a model cannot rebuild: your own data, your price, your judgment.
  4. Check that OAI-SearchBot can reach you. None of this matters if the fetch fails. A firewall rule or a managed robots.txt can block the crawler before any answer is composed.

Repeat check two in a month. That is the only data on GPT-6 citations you will be able to trust, because it is yours.

7. Where the other platforms stand

ChatGPT is one surface. The platforms that feed answer engines are a separate decision from the engines themselves.

If you are deciding where to spend effort beyond your own site, VALORAE Media's comparison of which platform gets you into AI answers is the companion read.

NovaTechRay will update this post when OpenAI documents how sources appear in Intelligent UI answers. Until then, the gap is the finding.

The short version

  • Know that GPT-6 with Intelligent UI rolled out from 7 October 2026 to every ChatGPT tier.
  • Accept that OpenAI has not said how citations appear in chart, form or tool answers.
  • Treat pure calculator pages as the most exposed and add first-party value to them.
  • Snapshot ChatGPT referrals in GA4 now, before the rollout settles.
  • Ask your ten money questions by hand and record the format and the source.
  • Confirm OAI-SearchBot can fetch your pages.

Frequently asked questions

What is Intelligent UI in ChatGPT?

It is the GPT-6 capability, announced by OpenAI on 7 October 2026, that lets ChatGPT compose an answer from text, visuals and interactive elements, including graphics, tappable buttons, forms and charts. ChatGPT can also build a small tool on request, such as a calculator or a bill splitter, and can still answer in plain text when that is most useful.

Does GPT-6 still show sources?

OpenAI has not said how sources appear inside Intelligent UI answers. Neither the 7 October announcement nor the GPT-6 help page mentions citations. ChatGPT's general search help page, read 9 October 2026, says responses that use web search may include citations and a Sources button when available.

Can I turn off Intelligent UI?

Partly. OpenAI's GPT-6 help page says that on ChatGPT on the web you can turn off Layout and visuals in Settings to reduce visual elements, but some may still appear, and the setting does not switch the answer experience to a text-only mode.

Who gets GPT-6 in ChatGPT?

OpenAI says GPT-6 with Intelligent UI started rolling out to Plus, Pro, Business and Enterprise on 7 October 2026 and to Free and Go from the following day. Paid tiers run on GPT-6 Sol and Free and Go on GPT-6 Luna. The older ChatGPT desktop apps do not support Intelligent UI.
