Reddit lost 86 percent of its ChatGPT citations in about a week
One robots.txt line took Reddit from roughly 3.83 percent of ChatGPT Search citations to 0.52 percent. Google's surfaces barely moved and Perplexity did not. The off-site surface is now built per engine.
Short answer
Reddit's share of ChatGPT Search citations fell from around 3.83 percent, stable between 18 July and 7 August 2026, to 0.52 percent by 14 to 17 August, an 86.4 percent relative drop caused by a blanket robots.txt disallow. Google's surfaces fell far less, with AI Overviews down around 11.3 percent and AI Mode around 30.5 percent, and Reddit reportedly still accounts for about 46.7 percent of Perplexity's top-10 sources. The lesson is that off-site citation surfaces have to be built per engine, and that any channel resting on one third-party property can be erased by one line in a file you do not control.
Between 18 July and 7 August 2026, Reddit held a stable share of roughly 3.83 percent of ChatGPT Search citations.
By 14 to 17 August it was 0.52 percent.
That is an 86.4 percent relative drop in days. The cause, per ExplainX's write-up, was a blanket robots.txt disallow, and the citation data behind those figures is attributed to Promptwatch.
Google's surfaces barely flinched.
The same reporting puts AI Overviews down around 11.3 percent and AI Mode around 30.5 percent over the comparable window, and Reddit reportedly still accounts for about 46.7 percent of Perplexity's top-10 sources.
One publisher. One file. Four different outcomes.
Every off-site checklist in this category had Reddit near the top, ours included, and every one of those checklists assumed a single list would serve every engine.
That assumption died in a week.
Signal 1: the off-site surface is now four surfaces
For two years the advice was simple enough to fit on a slide. Get mentioned in the places assistants read, and Reddit was near the top of the places assistants read.
That worked while the engines shared a substrate.
It does not work now.
The August numbers show the same property being weighted at four different levels by four different systems within the same fortnight, driven by a policy decision at the publisher rather than by anything about the content. So a property is no longer good or bad for AI visibility in general. It is good or bad per engine, on a date.
Which changes the deliverable.
An off-site plan that names a list of sites is a guess unless it names which engine each site is for.
The method is not complicated and it is not new. Run your prompt set on each assistant separately, record the cited URLs, and build four lists rather than one. We cover the sampling discipline in how to measure whether AI assistants are recommending you, and the only change here is that the citation source column, which used to be a footnote, is now the most valuable thing in the sheet.
Expect the lists to disagree. A trade directory that does real work on Perplexity may not appear once on ChatGPT. A local newspaper that Google leans on may be absent everywhere else.
Then stop calling the union of those four lists a strategy and start treating each one as a separate build.
Signal 2: a channel you do not control is not a channel
Here is the line I have been repeating since August. Reddit was never yours.
Nothing about your content changed on 8 August 2026.
Your threads were the same threads, your answers were the same answers, your karma was intact.
And a single directive in a file on someone else's domain removed the surface anyway, because the surface was never a property of your work. It was a property of Reddit's licensing posture, which is a thing Reddit changes when its commercial interest changes.
That is the whole fragility argument in one event.
A channel is only as durable as the incentives of whoever owns the door.
So the question worth asking about every line in your off-site plan is what happens if that property signs, or refuses to sign, a content deal next quarter. If the honest answer is that the line disappears, the line is a tactic and not a channel.
This is why the only durable asset in this discipline is the one nobody can revoke. Your own domain, fetchable, server-rendered, with the facts stated in plain sentences near the H1. Everything else is rented, and August was the rent going up without notice.
I am aware that sounds like a GEO agency talking its own book, and NovaTechRay is one. It is, partly. The defence is that the same reasoning would have told you to stop over-indexing on Reddit in July, and nobody, including us, said so loudly enough at the time.
Signal 3: what to do this month
Four things, in order, none of which require a tool.
Inventory the third-party properties currently carrying your business. Directories, review platforms, trade bodies, local press, forums, marketplace listings. Write them down with the name of a human who could update each one.
Then run your category prompts on ChatGPT, Perplexity, Claude and Google AI Mode, five runs each, clean sessions, and record the cited sources for each engine separately. What you want out of this is not your own share of answer. It is the source list.
Next, cross-reference.
The properties that appear in the source lists and also appear in your inventory are the ones worth maintaining this quarter. The properties that appear in the source lists and are missing from your inventory are the actual work. The properties in your inventory that appear in no source list are a maintenance habit, not a channel.
And set a concentration limit. If any single third-party property accounts for more than a quarter of your cited presence on any engine, that is a risk position rather than a win, and the August event is the argument for why.
At NovaTechRay we now run that cross-reference before writing any off-site plan, for the plain reason that a plan written against last quarter's source list is a plan written against a file someone else can edit.
Signal 4: read the drop correctly
One caution before you act on any of the numbers above.
These figures describe Reddit, a very large publisher with an unusual relationship to every model lab, during a specific fortnight. They are not a law about how citations behave, and the ExplainX piece is reporting Promptwatch's measurement rather than running its own.
What the event proves is narrower and more useful than a trend.
It proves the mechanism: access policy at a source can move that source's citation share by an order of magnitude, on one engine, within days, while barely touching another engine.
Which is a mechanism you can plan around even if you never trust a single one of the percentages.
The short version
- Build the off-site citation list per engine, because one property now performs four different ways.
- Run your category prompts on each assistant separately and harvest the cited sources, not your own share.
- Inventory every third-party property carrying your business, with an owner's name against each.
- Cross-reference the inventory against the source lists and drop whatever appears in neither.
- Cap any single third-party property at a quarter of your cited presence on any engine.
- Put the durable version of every fact on your own domain, server-rendered, near the H1.
- Treat the percentages as a mechanism to plan around rather than a trend to extrapolate.
Rebuilding an off-site list that a robots.txt change just emptied is ordinary work at novatechray.com.
Frequently asked questions
Why did Reddit's ChatGPT citations collapse in August 2026?
A blanket robots.txt disallow. Citation data attributed to Promptwatch and reported by ExplainX shows Reddit's share of ChatGPT Search citations holding near 3.83 percent from 18 July to 7 August 2026 and falling to 0.52 percent by 14 to 17 August, a relative drop of 86.4 percent in days rather than months.
Did the same drop happen on Google and Perplexity?
No, and that is the important part. The same reporting puts the fall on Google AI Overviews at around 11.3 percent and on AI Mode at around 30.5 percent, both far smaller, while Reddit reportedly still accounts for roughly 46.7 percent of Perplexity's top-10 sources. One publisher, one policy change, four different outcomes.
Should I still post on Reddit for AI visibility?
Post there if the audience is real and the answers are useful. Do not treat it as a citation channel, because the channel is controlled by a robots.txt file at a company with its own licensing negotiations to run. Measure which third-party properties get cited in answers about your category and build from that list instead.
What does building the citation surface per engine mean?
It means running your prompt set separately on each assistant, recording which sources each one cites for your category, and accepting that the four lists will not match. A directory that carries weight on Perplexity may be invisible on ChatGPT. There is no longer one off-site list that serves every engine.
