How It Works

How to get ChatGPT to recommend your business

What determines whether an AI assistant names your business in an answer, separated from the tactics that are sold hard and supported by nothing.

Short answer

There is no submission form and no setting. An assistant names you when it can retrieve a page about you that it can read, and when enough independent sources corroborate what that page says. In practice that means server-rendered HTML, no blocked answering crawlers, a direct answer near the top of the page, and being mentioned on sites you do not own.

This question arrives in three phrasings. How do I get ChatGPT to mention my business. How do I get AI to recommend my business. How do I get my brand recommended by AI. They are the same question, and the honest answer is narrower than most agencies will tell you.

There is no submission step

Start here, because it saves money. There is no form, no dashboard, no index status, no verification file. Google publishes an explicit statement that there are no additional requirements to appear in AI Overviews or AI Mode beyond being indexed and eligible to show with a snippet, and that no special structured data is needed.

So anything sold to you as "getting your business into ChatGPT" is either doing ordinary technical work under a new name, or doing nothing.

What has to be true

An assistant names a business when two conditions hold. It can retrieve a page that says the thing, and it has corroboration that the thing is true.

The page has to be readable without JavaScript

This is the single highest-confidence item and it eliminates a surprising number of businesses. Across an analysis of more than 500 million crawler fetches, no major AI crawler executed JavaScript. GPTBot fetched JavaScript files and never ran them. The same held for ClaudeBot, PerplexityBot and others.

Only Google's AI surfaces and Microsoft Copilot render JavaScript, because they inherit Googlebot and Bingbot respectively.

If your site builds its content in the browser, ChatGPT, Claude and Perplexity see an empty shell. Check by disabling JavaScript and reloading. If your opening hours, your services and your location vanish, that is what those crawlers see.

The answering crawlers have to be allowed

There are two different kinds of AI crawler and most robots.txt files confuse them.

Training crawlers build the model's background knowledge. Answering crawlers fetch pages so you can be cited in a live answer. Blocking an answering crawler removes you from that surface completely.

The answering crawlers worth naming explicitly:

TokenOperatorWhat blocking it costs you
OAI-SearchBotOpenAIChatGPT search visibility
Claude-SearchBotAnthropicClaude search visibility
PerplexityBotPerplexityPerplexity entirely
BingbotMicrosoftBing, Yahoo and Copilot at once

Google-Extended is a common trap. It governs Gemini training and grounding in some other Google products. It does not affect AI Overviews or AI Mode eligibility. People block it believing they are protecting content and then wonder why nothing changed.

Pages that 404 are worse than you think

AI crawlers are unusually bad at following a site's history. Measured 404 rates ran to roughly 35 percent for ChatGPT and Claude crawlers, against about 8 percent for Googlebot.

That gap is mostly stale URLs and redirect chains. It is unglamorous work and it is the highest-confidence fix on this page.

Put the answer where it gets read

Research into ChatGPT's retrieval pipeline found that the snippet it stores for a page is roughly 200 characters, query-independent, frozen at index time, and taken from the text immediately around the H1.

Query-independent matters. The same stored snippet is returned whether someone asked about your pricing or your location. You do not get a different extract for a different question.

So the paragraph after your H1 is doing more work than any other text on the page. It should say what the business is, where it is, and who it is for, in plain words, without a preamble.

The part most businesses underrate

Your own site is the smaller half.

A study of roughly 75,000 brands measured correlation with AI Overview brand visibility. Branded web mentions correlated at 0.664. Backlinks correlated at 0.218. Mentions correlated roughly three times more strongly than links.

Separately, an analysis of more than 25 million citations across ChatGPT, Claude and Gemini found earned media accounted for about 84 percent of AI citations. Paid and advertorial placements accounted for 0.3 percent.

Both figures are correlational and neither proves causation. But the direction is consistent across independent datasets, and it points somewhere uncomfortable: the highest-leverage work is getting written about on sites you do not control. Being included in a credible "best X in Y" list is worth more than publishing your own.

What to ignore

Some of the most confidently sold tactics have been tested and did not hold up.

Schema markup does not cause citations. A matched study compared 1,885 pages that added JSON-LD against 4,000 control pages with similar prior citation levels. AI Overview citations went down 4.6 percent, a statistically significant decline. AI Mode and ChatGPT showed changes indistinguishable from zero. The widely quoted stat that cited pages are three times more likely to have schema is real and is a confound: sites that add schema also fix their technical SEO, build links and update content.

Schema is still worth having for conventional rich results and entity disambiguation. It is not a citation lever.

llms.txt does nothing. Google states plainly that it does not use it. Across an analysis of 515 million AI bot traffic events, requests touching the file were negligible.

speakable schema is not a GEO feature. It never left a news-only beta tied to Google Assistant.

FAQPage no longer produces a Google rich result. That feature ended on 7 May 2026. The markup remains valid and harmless. It is not a shortcut to being cited.

A short honest checklist

  1. Disable JavaScript and reload. If the content disappears, fix that before anything else.
  2. Read your robots.txt and confirm OAI-SearchBot, Claude-SearchBot, PerplexityBot and Bingbot are not blocked.
  3. Crawl your own site for 404s and redirect chains. Fix them.
  4. Rewrite the paragraph after your H1 so it answers the question a stranger would ask.
  5. Register Bing Webmaster Tools and read the AI Performance report. It shows Copilot citations and the grounding queries the model generated. It is free and it is the richest first-party data available.
  6. Spend the remaining effort getting mentioned somewhere you do not own.

None of that is exotic. That is rather the point.

Frequently asked questions

Can I submit my business to ChatGPT?

No. There is no submission form, no index status page, and no equivalent of Search Console for AI answers. Anyone selling you a submission service is selling you nothing. The only inputs you control are whether your pages can be fetched and read, and what independent sources say about you.

Does blocking GPTBot stop me appearing in ChatGPT?

No, and this is the most expensive misunderstanding in the field. GPTBot is the training crawler. OAI-SearchBot is the one that surfaces sites in ChatGPT search. You can block GPTBot and still appear in answers. Block OAI-SearchBot and you disappear from that surface entirely.

How long does it take?

Nobody can tell you honestly, because there is no index status to check. What you can measure is whether the mechanical prerequisites are met, and then sample a fixed set of prompts over time. Treat any specific timeline promise as a sales tactic.

Do I need llms.txt?

No. Google states directly that it does not use the file. No major provider has committed to reading it in production answers. It is a real convention for documentation aimed at coding agents, and it does nothing for a business trying to get recommended.
