Is ChatGPT shopping research gone? The help page now redirects, and I found no retirement note from OpenAI.
Short answer
I found no OpenAI announcement of a removal. Its shopping research help link now redirects to Shopping with ChatGPT Search, which never names the feature. Treat it as folded into search, and optimise for product data.
Google finishes 'chatgpt shopping research' with 'gone' and 'removed'. On 6 November 2026 OpenAI's old help link redirected to Shopping with ChatGPT Search, a page that never uses the phrase, while the release notes showed no removal entry. What the evidence supports, what it does not, and what a store should do with the signals OpenAI does publish.
On 6 November 2026, Google finished "chatgpt shopping research" with "gone" and "removed".
So people are looking for a button that used to be there.
I went to find out what happened, and the honest answer is messier than a headline.
OpenAI launched shopping research on 24 November 2025 as a guided experience that asks clarifying questions and builds a buyer's guide.
Here is the complication. The help link for it now lands on a different page, and that page does not say the feature ended.
NovaTechRay's rule on claims like this is simple: show the evidence, say where it stops. So that is what follows.
Step 1: What I found, and when
I checked four things on 6 November, in a browser, because openai.com help pages tend to refuse scripted fetches.
The old help link. The shopping research help URL redirected to an article titled Shopping with ChatGPT Search, marked "Updated: 6 days ago".
That article's text. I searched the rendered page for the phrase "shopping research". Zero matches.
The release notes. ChatGPT's release notes use the phrase three times, all inside the 24 November 2025 launch entry. There is no entry saying it was removed.
The launch post. Still online at its original address.
That is the whole record I could gather.
Step 2: What that record does not prove
It does not prove the feature is gone.
A help article can be merged for tidiness. A feature can stay in the product under a different entry point. And I did not test the interface across every plan and device, so I cannot tell you what your account shows today.
It also does not prove the feature is still alive.
Removing a feature from the help center and pointing its URL at a general article is a strong signal that OpenAI no longer treats it as a separate thing. But "signal" is the right word.
So my reading, marked as a reading: shopping research has been folded into shopping in ChatGPT Search, at least as far as OpenAI's documentation goes.
If OpenAI publishes something that contradicts this, I will correct this post and say so at the top.
Step 3: Why a store owner should not care much
The name is the least useful part of this.
Whatever happened to the guided mode, the shopping surface people land on is very much alive, and the current help page describes it in detail.
The release notes entry dated 24 March 2026, read on 6 November 2026, says product results became more visually rich, with side by side comparison on price, reviews and features, and improved product data coverage and freshness. The help page read the same day adds virtual try-on and saved products in Library.
So the feature people miss was one way in. The product results underneath it are what you can influence.
Step 4: What OpenAI says drives product results
This is the useful section, and it comes straight from the help page as I read it on 6 November 2026.
A product appears in the carousel when ChatGPT perceives it as relevant to the person's intent, considering their query and context, such as Memory or custom instructions.
When deciding what to show, OpenAI lists these inputs:
- Structured metadata from first-party and third-party providers, such as price and product description, plus other third-party content.
- Model responses generated before ChatGPT considers any new search results.
- OpenAI's safety standards and product policies.
It also says some factors matter more depending on the request. Its example, read on 6 November 2026, is a stated budget of $30, where ChatGPT will focus more on price.
Read that second bullet twice. What the model already believes about you can shape the result before it searches. You cannot edit that directly, and that is a real limit on anything a GEO agency sells you.
OpenAI also says product results are selected independently and are not ads, and not influenced by OpenAI partnerships. That is its claim. I can't audit it, and neither can anyone selling you a shortcut.
Step 5: Fix the data, in this order
Now the part you can do something about. Everything OpenAI is quoted on below comes from that same 6 November 2026 reading, so check the page before you act on it.
Know how you get in. The help page says Shopify merchants are already integrated through Shopify Catalog, with no additional work. Everyone else can read the Product Feed documentation and apply for direct feed access. I covered the waitlist and its limits in the merchant program post.
Clean the fields. Price and description are the examples OpenAI names. ChatGPT may generate simplified titles and descriptions from what it receives, so vague or stuffed product copy gets rewritten without you.
Keep price current. The page warns there may be a delay before merchant price changes show. It also says merchants are ranked on availability, price, quality, and whether they are the maker or primary seller. If you are the maker, say so plainly on the page.
Earn the labels honestly. Labels like "Budget-friendly" are generated by ChatGPT from available information and may rest on what reviewers say. Review summaries come from public websites, and OpenAI says it does not verify reviews or ratings. So your reviews off your own site feed what appears here, including the bad ones.
Don't build on the feature name. If an agency pitched you a "shopping research strategy" this year, ask what changes now that OpenAI's own help link for it points somewhere else.
Step 6: What I would measure
Very little, and carefully.
Run the same five buying questions in ChatGPT each month, from a clean account. Write down which products appear and which merchant sits first. That is a small sample with personalisation stripped out, and OpenAI says context changes results, so it tells you direction at best.
Then check referral traffic from chatgpt.com in your analytics.
I'd rather hand you those two weak signals than a score. I don't have a study showing how much product feeds move revenue, and I have not seen an independent one I would trust.
If you sell on social as well, the same question applies to which platform gets you into AI answers, and that answer is less tidy than most vendors suggest.
NovaTechRay's position on all of this is that a dated primary source beats a confident summary. When this one moves, the post moves with it.
The short version
- Don't report shopping research as dead. OpenAI has not said so that I can find.
- Don't assume it is alive either. Its help link now redirects.
- Treat the product results in ChatGPT Search as the surface to work on.
- Check your route in: Shopify Catalog or an application for a direct feed.
- Keep price, description and availability accurate and current.
- Say on the page if you are the maker or primary seller.
- Re-run the same buying questions monthly and treat it as direction only.

Frequently asked questions
Is ChatGPT shopping research gone?
The evidence is incomplete. On 6 November 2026 OpenAI's shopping research help link redirected to a page called Shopping with ChatGPT Search that does not use the phrase, while the release notes showed no removal entry and the launch post was still online. I found no OpenAI statement that it was retired.
What replaced ChatGPT shopping research?
I found no replacement named by OpenAI. The help page read on 6 November 2026 describes shopping inside ChatGPT Search: product results, comparisons, image search, virtual try-on and saved products in Library. Calling that a replacement is my inference from the redirect.
How does ChatGPT choose which products to show?
OpenAI's help page, read on 6 November 2026, says it considers your query and context, structured metadata from first-party and third-party providers, other third-party content, model responses generated before new search results, and its safety standards. It says product results are not ads.
Do ChatGPT ads affect product results?
OpenAI's help page, read on 6 November 2026, says product results are selected independently and are not ads, nor influenced by OpenAI partnerships, and that ads are separate. That is OpenAI's own statement; outsiders cannot audit it.
How do I get my products into ChatGPT?
OpenAI's help page, read on 6 November 2026, says Shopify merchants' product data is already integrated through Shopify Catalog with no extra work, and other merchants can read the Product Feed documentation and apply for direct feed access.
